I have our bank accounts set up in the best way I could figure out to help us stick to our budget. I have 100% of Dave's paycheck and any/all of my income sent to our "main" checking account. From there I send various amounts to other institutions to cover our expenses.
Twice a month, I have $900 sent from the main account to our "discretionary" account and that's what we use to fund the budget I discuss here (food, dining out, etc). It's also the account that links up to our debit/mastercards. I find this to be easier because I can tell how well we're sticking to our budget by simply looking at the bank balance. Whatever's left is how much I (should) have left to spend.
I have these transfers set up automatically and I generally don't have trouble with them. A certain amount goes to the credit union for our car payments, another amount to the kids college funds, some to our money market account and then, of course, the transfer to the discretionary fund, which, as luck has it, is at the EXACT SAME BANK as the "main" account.
So for whatever inexplicable butt-main reason, Dave was paid on Friday and I assumed, since I've had it set up this way for months, that $900 went to our discretionary account on FRIDAY. And, as of today, it still hasn't transferred. The account is showing up as overdrawn, even though technically everything that happens over the weekend doesn't clear until Monday, including the (delayed!) transfer.
I have no doubt that I'll easily be able to talk my way out of any overdraft charges, but the whole thing still chaps my hide. Why would the transfer NOT show up as pending until Monday when all the rest of our spending does?
